OMSI Field Trip

Thursday, January 10, 2019 – 10:15 to 2:45 – OMSI – King Tut Exhibit, Planetarium Show, and Hands-On Science Experiments – Portland, Or (K-8)

Location: OMSI – 1945 SE Water Ave., Portland, OR
Date: Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2019
Time: 9:45 or 10:15 am to 2:45 pm (drive and meet us there at 9:45 or 10:15 or meet at DCS at 8:15 to ride the bus and return to DCS by 4:30 pm)

This is our biggest field trip yet! We are excited to be able to offer so many interesting options during the field trip to OMSI. We had many more families register for the field trip than we were expecting, and had to add several new options for activities, visits, and shows, in addition to extra King Tut Exhibit time slots to accommodate our large group (of over 200 participants).

OMSI staff has told us that there will be many schools there on field trips that day. DCS parents are always responsible for their own children during DCS field trips UNLESS certain students are in a group without a parent because the parent is with a younger DCS student during that time. Families who choose Groups C, D, E or F will be with their children and responsible for those children at all times during the day. We are hoping that students will wear green clothing or DCS t-shirts during the visit so that we can more easily identify DCS students. We will also try to have some DCS stickers available for kids to wear on their shirts or jacket during the field trip.

Siblings of DCS students may attend this field trip. Siblings will be able to attend planetarium shows, the IMax movie, and the King Tut Exhibit, but not the Labs or the Submarine Visits. Parents who need to stay with younger siblings during the Labs or Submarine Visits can ask DCS staff to supervise their DCS student(s) during those activities and meet back up with the group when the activity is over.

Siblings ages 4 and up will have to pay $10 each to DCS before the field trip. Siblings ages 3 and under are free.
DCS pays for one adult chaperone per field trip. If you will be bringing more than one adult chaperone, you will need to pay $15 for the extra adult before the field trip. If possible, you should bring a check or cash in to DCS before January 10. If you are unable to do so, you will need to bring cash or a check to OMSI and give your payment directly to Andrea Wilcoxon there before you check in for the field trip (before your 9:45 or 10:15 check-in time).

Choose Your Schedule of Activities for the Day

This online form is for families to select their first, second and third choice options for an activity schedule for their family or students during the field trip. Please read all the following information carefully so that you understand what will be happening during the field trip and during the day.

Please read the schedule options carefully and select your preferred group (schedule) from the choices below. We will try to get your first-choice option if possible, but we will be making final decisions based on number limits, so please fill out this form as early as possible if you have a strong preference! Some families will be assigned either a 1:00 or 1:15 King Tut start time based on group numbers.

We will be sending out an email with the list of families / students in each group on Tuesday, January 8. Families who have not filled out the form by that time will be assigned to a group based on availability.

Groups A, B, and C are strictly by grade-level and have a 16 to 18 student maximum. Families with kids in different age groups will have the parent stay with the youngest child(ren) and the older child(ren) will be supervised by DCS staff during the Lab (and possibly during the Planetarium Show and the King Tut Exhibit if the parents are with younger siblings).

Families who want to stay together with kids of multiple age groups should choose groups D, E or F.

Families riding the bus will need to be at DCS at 8:15 for an 8:30 departure time so that we can arrive at OMSI for the 10:15 check-in time. Families riding the bus will not be able to be in Group D, and must leave OMSI at 2:45 to get back on the bus so that we can be back at DCS by 4:15 or 4:30 pm.

The King Tut Exhibit takes about one hour (including a 15-20 minute self-guided audio tour at the beginning). The Labs at 11:15 will last for about 45 minutes. The Planetarium shows are about 25 minutes long. The IMAX movie is about 40 minutes long. The submarine visit will take about 20 minutes (not recommended for people who are uncomfortable in small spaces or unable to climb steep steps / ladders). Families can visit the rest of OMSI before, after, or in between activities if time permits.

We have a large lunch room reserved for a 12:00 lunch seating and a 12:30 lunch seating. We recommend that families bring a packed lunch, but OMSI does have an excellent restaurant with plenty of family-friendly food options (only the wait time to order and get your food can sometimes be long).

Group A (6th-8th grade) – 9:45 or 10:15 Check-in, OMSI Visit, 11:15 Lab – Squid Dissection – grades 6-8, 12:30 Lunch, 1:00 Dark Universe Planetarium Show (grades 3-8), 1:45 King Tut Exhibit (grades 3-8)

DCS is paying for OMSI entry fees, planetarium shows, Labs / Experiments, IMax movie entry fees, and submarine visits, and we encourage families to try to attend all of the activities scheduled for each group. However, you may choose to visit OMSI on your own during the planetarium show or IMax movie if you prefer. You may also visit OMSI with your family (you don’t have to stay with a group) in between activities if you have time, and after your last scheduled activity until the bus leaves at 2:45 or as late as closing time at 6:00 pm.

IMPORTANT: OMSI is very strict about the start times for each activity and we will not be able to wait for latecomers to any of the activities. Please be sure to keep your schedule with you and plan to take about 10 minutes to get from one activity or place in OMSI to another, arriving at least five minutes early for each activity or visit. Having to wait for five minutes while visiting with other DCS families would be much better than arriving late and not being able to get in.

$10 will be deducted from each student’s $300 Classes and Field Trips allotment fund for this field trip.

Please fill out this online form to let us know your preferred group / schedule – Families who do not fill out the form by Tuesday, January 8 will be assigned to a group / schedule based on availability.
