Fall Term 2018 Classes

Fall term classes – 2018

Parents can now find copies of the syllabi for most onsite fall term classes at DCS on the Fall 2018 Syllabi Document & in the Google Drive Folder.

Many of the lessons taught by DCS Guides onsite have lesson summaries on Planbook.com and parents can also use Planbook to track their own home learning.

Below you will find the schedule of classes offered through DCS for fall term, 2018. Although the actual schedule and classes will still be very similar to what we have offered in the past, we will no longer have a division between “morning core classes” and “afternoon enrichment classes”. Based on the results of a few parent surveys and input from families over the past year, we will have a balance each day of different types of classes throughout the day (literacy, math, social studies, arts, languages, technology, etc.) in  which any student can enroll. All classes are optional for DCS students.

Online enrollment through the Active.com registration system will begin at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, August 22. We encourage parents to enroll by Tuesday, August 28, at which time we will be sending class lists to all instructors. We also need make decisions about cancelling classes due to low enrollment by that time. However, the enrollment system will remain open until the day before the first class for classes that are still open, in case parents need to add or change classes. If you have not yet registered yourself and your child(ren) in the Active.com system, please read the Registration Instructions for Active.com Online Enrollment System so you can register your children as DCS students in the system before selecting classes.

We have revised our class schedule to offer one and two-hour long classes between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm each day. Parents will be able to enroll students for one class, multiple separate classes, a full day of classes, morning or afternoon blocks, or multiple full days of classes, as desired (not required). We will have a  family-room area where parents can wait with younger siblings for one or two hours while students are in class. We will also be offering a few supervised independentstudy periods when students can work on self-directed projects, online classes or curriculum related to their home learning under the guidance of an educator. Enrollment in independent-study sessions MUST be pre-approved by a DCS Guide before enrolling, and students must be working on assignments, projects, or online classes assigned by and overseen by their learning coach (parent).

Our schedule lists the times, names (or subjects) and grade levels of each class. So for example, “Art – 3-6” will be for grades 3-6. As usual at DCS, grade levels are recommended age levels, but we can be somewhat flexible with the actual age levels for each class based on children’s ability levels.

There is a $10 fee for every class offered through DCS which can be paid with Class and Field Trip Allotment Funds ($300). Each class you register for is $10 (whether one hour, two hour, or twice per week). This $10 fee is nonrefundable, and will not show up in the Active.com online course registration system but will be automatically taken out of your “Class and Field Trip Allotment Funds” in our accounting system. Sometimes classes will require additional materials fees – these will be reflected in the Active.com online registration system. Materials fees for DCS classes are paid for out of each student’s Regular Allotment Funds ($700).  Your Education Guide can help you arrange to use allotment funds for classes and materials fees,  or the parent can pay out-of-pocket. Please make payment arrangements with your EG. All materials fees are listed in the online course catalog (Active.com).

In the Active.com system, you can sort by location (choose “Oregon” first and then select one of our specific locations), or by time, see a list view or a calendar view (to see classes on each day of the week).

You can register multiple children in multiple classes all at once if you want by selecting ALL of the classes that ALL of your children want to take (by clicking the “Add” button under each class) and then changing the “quantity” to the number of children you want to enroll in each class.

You will need to click on the name of each class to see the course description and instructor. Once

you finalize your registrations (“Complete Order”) you may be asked how you would like to pay. Select “cash or check” (pay later – these fees will actually be taken out of your Regular Allotment Funds and you will not have to pay by cash or check…) and do not choose pay by credit card.

You can see the list of classes with descriptions and instructors on this document – Fall Class Descriptions.

Instructors Meredith Rich, Andy Johnson, Stasey Norstrom, and Emily Blanton are all Education Guides (certified teachers) at DCS. The other instructors are Community Educators with background and expertise in the subjects they are teaching. Instructor Bios will be posted here soon.

Please note that there are four separate K-1 Early Learning through Play classes (M, T, W, Th). If you want to sign up your child(ren) for two, three, or four of those classes per week, you will need to register for each class separately until you have the number of classes you want.
