Rickreall Dairy Tour/Field Trip
May 17, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
We offer an hour long, guided tour, where students can visit the calf barn, milking parlor, tank room, maternity barn and regular barn. In the calf barn the students will learn that we have an average of six babies born on our dairy every day. They will see how we feed all of those babies and how we care for them. In the milking parlor, the students will learn that one cow at Rickreall Dairy produces an average of 10 gallons of milk a day. They will see how our milking machines work and they will see how we store our milk in the tank room. We will also talk about the milk truck in the tank room. In the maternity barn we will visit the cows that are just about to have babies…. and sometimes we are even able to watch a baby be delivered (this is not a guarantee). And in the regular barns the students will see where our cows eat, drink, and sleep. We talk about how much food a cow eats and how much water she drinks. For upper elementary we will also talk about the cost of operations, how it’s possible to care for so many animals, equipment we use, and how science and technology assist us here at the dairy.
